United States men’s national team striker Jozy Altidore has only scored a single goal this season, but he may have decided the Premier League title race Saturday at Stamford Bridge.

Altidore drew a penalty from Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta in the 81st minute, and Sunderland’s Fabio Borini converted from the spot to give the last-place team in the Premier League a shocking win, 2-1. Azpilicueta went down to the ground a few feet away from the ball and Altidore appeared to step on him, causing the American to slip, but referee Mike Dean pointed to the penalty spot with the game tied 1-1.

Chelsea’s players and coaches were irate. Assistant Rui Faria had to be restrained and was sent off the field.

Sunderland’s win not only keeps the team alive in the battle to avoid relegation (Sunderland is three points away from 17th place), but places Liverpool’s destiny back in its own hands. Liverpool, which is now two points clear with a game in hand over the Blues, will host Chelsea next weekend — but as long as Liverpool wins each of its other three games, the title will go to Anfield.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho congratulated the referee on his performance after the game.
